Like the mythical phoenix rising from ashes, our senior students transform their months of rigorous academic work into powerful presentations that inspire, educate, and captivate their younger peers.

What Makes Phoenix Talks Special

The Phoenix Talks is more than just a presentation day; its a vibrant celebration of growth, inquiry, and mentorship. Its where our pre-university scholars in the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and the career-focused IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) pass the torch of knowledge to the younger students following in their footsteps. But what does this “journey” actually look like? Instead of just exams, the IB experience at IGBIS is defined by profound, self-driven projects that shape students into critical thinkers and engaged global citizens.

The Phoenix Talks brings these projects to life:

  • Imagine a student defending their 4,000-word Extended Essay (EE), a university-level research paper on a topic they are passionate about.
  • Picture another student presenting their Reflective Project (RP), where they investigate an ethical dilemma within their chosen career path.
  • See the impact of Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) and Service Learning (SL) projects, where classroom learning translates into tangible community action.

A Day of Inspiration and Discovery

Phoenix Talks unfolds across four dynamic sessions, each designed to showcase different aspects of our students’ learning journey. The event transforms our school into a vibrant hub of intellectual exchange where academic achievement meets genuine human connection.

The morning began with formal presentations, where seniors took the stage to share their discoveries. One talk, exploring the making of white powder from plastic bottles, sparked lively debate and demonstrated how the IBDP programme encourages students to grapple with real-world issues.

Next, the school transformed into a gallery for the TOK and PPS Exhibitions. Here, students wandered among booths as Grade 12 students presented their displays for Theory of Knowledge (TOK), a course that questions how we know what we know, and Personal and Professional Skills (PPS), which prepares them for the world of work. It was an interactive museum of big ideas, curated by our students.

The energy shifted in the student-led workshops, where learning became a hands-on experience. In one popular session, the “Plant Project, ” attendees didn’t just hear about a sustainability initiative; they rolled up their sleeves and potted their own plants. This workshop was a perfect example of the IB core in action: combining service with practical, inspiring action.

The day culminated in a panel discussion, a cornerstone of the Phoenix Talks. In this frank and supportive forum, a diverse group of Grade 12 students fielded questions from the audience, offering candid advice on subject choices, workload management, and finding your passion within the IB programme. The takeaway for younger students was invaluable: there is no single path to success, only the one you carve for yourself.

Celebrating Excellence and Vision

The Phoenix Talks is a true embodiment of the IGBIS spirit, a tradition brought to life through the collective effort of our dedicated IB faculty and the remarkable initiative of our students. Under the coordination of Mr Magnus Drechsler and supported by a team of teachers, the event provides a powerful platform for our Grade 12 cohort to culminate their IB journey.

Beyond the Programme: IGBIS Students Gain Real-World Edge at IMU /about-us/latestnews/igbis-students-internship-at-imu/ /about-us/latestnews/igbis-students-internship-at-imu/#respond Thu, 16 Oct 2025 07:06:08 +0000 /?p=20099 啊因]]> At 91勛圖厙 (IGBIS), we believe that a truly transformative education isnt confined to a single programme or a classroom. Its about creating an entire ecosystem of opportunity where every student can explore their passions and build their future. This philosophy was brought to life this summer when two of our IB Diploma Programme (DP) students, Anlan and Nate, completed a prestigious two-week medical research internship at the International Medical University (IMU) – Malaysias premier private medical and healthcare university.

This unique opportunity, made possible through our IBCP dual-enrolment partnership with IMU, demonstrates how the walls between programmes at IGBIS are designed to be permeable. Its a testament to our belief that real-world experience is a vital part of every students journey, whether they are on the career-focused CP or the academically rigorous DP.

From DP Classroom to IMU Laboratory

For Anlan, who has always been fascinated by biology and chemistry, the internship was a chance to test her academic knowledge in a professional setting. Her days were filled with hands-on lab work – preparing cell cultures, assisting with protein analysis through Western blotting, and practicing Gram staining techniques for bacterial identification.

It was challenging but exciting, she shared. Every step required precision and focus. I learned not just about science, but also about time management, responsibility, and staying organised under pressure – skills we constantly develop in the DP, but now I was applying them in a completely new context.

The internship provided more than just technical skills; it offered invaluable mentorship. Anlans experience was guided by a dedicated IMU professor, who provided not only technical training but also strategic advice about learning and future career development.

The IGBIS Advantage: One School, Multiple Pathways

So, how do two DP students land a coveted internship through a CP partnership? The answer lies in the IGBIS advantage.

Our IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) is the engine that forges these deep, strategic partnerships with world-class institutions like IMU, SCAD, Embry-Riddle, and others. These partnerships are a core part of the CP pathway, providing direct avenues for career-related learning.

However, at IGBIS, these partnerships are treated as a school-wide resource. We foster a culture where all students are encouraged to seize these opportunities. For motivated DP students like Anlan and Nate, this means they can complement their deep academic study with tangible, resume-building experiences that give them a critical edge in university applications and beyond.

This unique ecosystem ensures that IGBIS students dont just study – they explore, experiment, and grow into confident, future-ready leaders, regardless of the programme they choose.

Why This Matters for Parents

Stories like Anlans and Nates show that IGBIS is more than a school – its a dynamic launchpad. We provide an environment where students can:

Apply rigorous academic learning in real-world, professional contexts.
Access exclusive partnerships with leading universities and global organizations.
Discover their passions and confirm their future goals through direct experience.
Graduate with more than a diploma; they graduate with confidence, practical skills, and a story that sets them apart.

For Anlan, her time at IMU was transformative. “This experience reinforced my desire to pursue higher-level studies in Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology,” she reflected. “It gave me clarity and confidence about my future goals.”

Ready to Explore the IGBIS Advantage?

Whether your child is drawn to the academic depth of the DP or the career-focused approach of the CP, they will find a world of opportunity at IGBIS.

91勛圖厙 Student Secures Prestigious Rugby Scholarship Through FirstPoint USA Partnership /about-us/latestnews/igbis-student-secures-firstpointusa-scholarship/ /about-us/latestnews/igbis-student-secures-firstpointusa-scholarship/#respond Wed, 24 Sep 2025 00:14:08 +0000 /?p=20036 啊因]]> The 91勛圖厙 (IGBIS) community is bursting with immense pride and excitement as we celebrate a monumental achievement by one of our own. Kian Pendlebury, a standout student-athlete and our esteemed 2024 Athlete of the Year, has officially committed to Rio Grande University in Ohio, USA, having secured a fantastic rugby scholarship through our valued partner, FirstPoint USA.

This incredible accomplishment is a testament to Kians unwavering dedication, exceptional talent, and the powerful synergy between IGBIS’s holistic education and the global pathways provided by FirstPoint USA. Kians journey from the rugby pitches of Malaysia to the collegiate sports fields of the United States perfectly embodies the opportunities we strive to create for our students.

A formidable flanker for the KL Tigers – a global partner of the renowned Leicester Tigers Rugby- Kian has consistently demonstrated leadership and skill on the field. His athletic prowess, honed from his early days with the Doha Rugby Club, culminated in him being honoured as the IGBIS Athlete of the Year, an accolade that foreshadowed this significant next step.

In the Fall of 2026, Kian will join the Rio Grande University Red Storm, a competitive National Collegiate Rugby D1 program. Under the guidance of Head Coach Brad Sandig, he will be part of a dynamic and developing program in both 15s and 7s rugby. The Red Storm, who compete in the tough Big Rivers Rugby Conference, are coming off a strong season in both codes, which included an appearance in the prestigious Mens Premier Cup division of NCRs Collegiate Rugby Championship 7s. They have already kicked off their new campaign with a statement victory over the University of Michigan and a tough battle against rivals Wheeling, signalling an exciting and competitive environment for Kian to grow and thrive.

“This is more than just an acceptance letter; it’s the culmination of years of hard work and a dream realised,” said an IGBIS spokesperson.” Kian represents the very best of IGBIS academically committed, athletically gifted, and globally minded. We are thrilled to see him take this well-deserved leap and cannot wait to cheer him on as a Red Storm athlete. His success is a powerful validation of our partnership with FirstPoint USA, which is dedicated to opening doors for our talented student-athletes.”

This achievement also shines a spotlight on the successful IGBIS-FirstPoint USA partnership, which actively scouts and supports students in securing athletic scholarships at universities across the United States and beyond. It serves as an inspiring example for our community, proving that with the right support and determination, our students can compete on the world stage.

The entire IGBIS community joins in wishing Kian the very best for the remainder of the season with the KL Tigers RFC. We will be following his collegiate journey at Rio Grande University with great anticipation and pride.

Go Kian!

More Than a School: How IGBIS Empowered One Student to Follow Her Dreams to Oxford /about-us/latestnews/morethanaschool-julieoxford/ /about-us/latestnews/morethanaschool-julieoxford/#respond Thu, 04 Sep 2025 02:26:10 +0000 /?p=19949 啊因]]> Julie always dreamed of studying the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. She was drawn to its flexible and broad range of subjects, which her old school didn’t offer. At 91勛圖厙 (IGBIS), she found the perfect balance: a rigorous IB Diploma Programme, a welcoming international community, and the freedom to deeply explore her passions.

The Power of Asking for Help

While Julie is a natural perfectionist, she says her greatest achievement at IGBIS wasn’t academic at all. It was learning to ask for help.

“I used to think that asking for help made you look weak,” she says. “But at IGBIS, I learned that’s not true. The teachers and community showed me that asking for guidance is a key part of the learning processit just makes you stronger.”

This culture of support and teamwork gave her the confidence to grow both as a student and as a person.

Reflecting on her Diploma Programme journey, Julie shared that time management was key to her success. She relied on to-do lists and planning apps to organise her revision, manage her learning, and stay on top of tasks.

A Tailored Approach to Learning

Julie excelled in math and physics, which led her to pursue Engineering Science. She chose the University of Oxford not just for its global reputation but also for its unique one-on-one tutoring system. This personalized teaching style was something she was already familiar with at IGBIS.

“It really matches how I prefer to learn,” she explains.

At IGBIS, small class sizes, strong teacher mentorship, and inquiry-based learning helped her build critical thinking skills, ask questions, and take ownership of her education. These are the exact skills that are highly valued at Oxford and beyond.

A self-portrait of Julie taken in the DP/CP Lounge at IGBIS.
Preparing for Life, Not Just University

Julie credits IGBIS for preparing her for more than just a demanding academic environment. She learned practical skills and resilience, with teachers providing both academic guidance and emotional support. She remembers a specific exercise where students had to design a weekly meal plan on a fictional budget.

“It sounds simple,” she says, “but it really helps you get ready for university life and living on your own.”

This September, Julie is starting her Master of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. Her advice to younger students is simple: “On the academic side, make sure to consistently review your subjects. But beyond that, don’t forget to enjoy the process.”

What IGBIS Stands For

Julie’s journey reflects not only her own determination but also the core mission of IGBIS: empowering students to embrace challenges, community, and personal growth. At IGBIS, students dont just get ready for university – they get ready for life.

91勛圖厙 Retains Title at EViE Race Day! /about-us/latestnews/igbis-retains-title-at-evie-race-day/ /about-us/latestnews/igbis-retains-title-at-evie-race-day/#respond Thu, 19 Jun 2025 08:52:37 +0000 /?p=19648 啊因]]> On the day after the end of term, the IGBIS Electric Vehicles in Education (EViE) team returned to the Horizon Beranang Circuit for the second race of the season, this time as defending champions! With new drivers Travis and Isabella at the wheel, and a restructured pit crew made up of Hariz, Nate, Noah, and Lukas, the team was ready to face the heat – both on and off the track. Team management and photography were in the capable hands of Alia and Sharon respectively.

Despite soaring temperatures – 31簞C in the shade by 10 a.m. – the team arrived early to assemble the car after its journey from school. Scrutineering was handled with care to avoid penalties, and once passed, the drivers took a walk of the redesigned circuit. With more corners and tighter turns than before, the layout promised a thrilling challenge and an exciting spectacle for the crowd.

Grid positions were based on points scored from the teams portfolio submission, which included insights into Bufori vehicles, racing line theory, legendary F1 drivers, and the engineering behind the EViE car. Securing first place in the portfolio section gave the team an early psychological edge.

During practice, both drivers took time to familiarise themselves with the circuit – so different from the running track they trained on at school. Isabella showed great speed early on, but wisely opted for a more conservative pace in the race to conserve battery life.

The race strategy was a true team effort. Travis took the first 12 laps with confidence and maintained the lead, followed by a lightning-fast pit stop that handed control to Isabella. She drove with precision, pacing the team evenly with Sri KDU. Lukas oversaw timings and calculations, relaying critical data to Alia, who kept the drivers informed via the pit board.

A tactical battery swap near the end allowed Travis to finish strong using Isabellas well-conserved battery, crossing the line in first place. Impressively, IGBIS was the only team to avoid any race or pit stop penalties.

Final results:

– Best Portfolio
– Fastest Pit Crew
– Best Race Time
– Race Winner
– Overall Winner

Congratulations to the entire team for a flawless performance, outstanding teamwork, and for bringing the trophy home once again!
